Disclaimers:
A, This AbalaTip is not intended to invalidate or to mention that your learning method is wrong, but rather this is a guide and to emphasize the advantages of active learning in medical school
B. Take note this will involve the correlation of two topics of my blog which is Visual Learning, Analytical skills and Active Learning, however those two will only be applied to this blog and other subjects discussed individually as well. If you do not read those blogs, I would suggest you read those two blogs first before reading those since it will give you a hands-on application of blog. Pls click the title on the post below to read more about those blogs
Again the goal, assuming that you had already read the Active Learning Strategies in medical school is to reach the 90% retention from at least 50% as shown in the pyramid below
Let us bisect the subjects into Medical Jurisprudence and Legal Medicine as different subject and look at the tips that we can provide the different tips on how to approach this subjects
Medical Jurisprudence
In this subject this is the application of Law to Medical Practice, there are textbooks or Raw Materials that are available such as Medical Jurisprudence Platinum, Basics of Jurisprudence (the green book) and Medical Jurisprudence by Solis (the old one), btw the main book here will be the Solis one since it is used primarily in the Philippine Physician Licensure Examinations. The tip is use two books (either Juris Plat or Green book + Solis) so that you are prepared for both exams.
Example if you had read Green book, I would suggest that you would supplement it with solis book so that you can review both for Long Exams and PLE at the same time, for the active learning you can convert the following into
Tabulations- tabulate and compare the different principles involved in the law and ethics,
Bullet- convert a paragraph into bullet BASED ON YOUR UNDERSTANDING
Diagrams- you can use diagrams also as to see the process flow or difference in the law
**Do not just copy and paste from both the textbook and what the Atty, MD taught you, rewrite it based on your understanding, remember the goal here is understand and memorize nooks and crannies as it will give you a strong background in this subject
Legal Medicine
In the Legal Medicine, it is now reversed hat it is now an application of Medicine to the Law the goal here is to apply whatever is the medical practice applied to medicine, for example the wounds etc.
Visualize here wat you had learned, also there are many nooks and crannies here like test for something, the entry and exit wound, the goal here is to memorize and understand, as like above you can apply it to the Solis book which is the official textbook of Legal Medicine here in the Philippines. bullets, add pictures, visualizations can also be applied here not just listening to the lecture and highlighting notes, again the emphasis here is to do Active learning, and Active Learning is a student centered process that's why students doing this has more understanding and memory retention to the subject.
