AbalaTips 101: Recommended Philippine Medical Textbooks and Approach to Textbook --> Active Learning

Welcome again to AbalaTIPS 101: Maligayang pagbasa mga dokie sa AbalaTIPS

Here I will give a little bit of Introduction to Medical Textbook and how I did to read and approach them in such a way it can stuck into the long memory for a long time spanning on learning to exam. Then I will give each of the textbook list per subject which I hope could help you in your subject. Take note here are only RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOK to be used,

Disclaimer: This AbalaTIP is encourage readers to read textbook and do active learning on them, this will not invalidate of your study strategy but rather as a supplement to encourage to put active learning on it

Again what is active learning,

Now according to Queen University in Canada, ACTIVE Learning is  where "it engages students in learning, using activities such as reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving, which promote analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of class content,"  this means that students will play a big role in that part to supplement their learning

According to Boston University, here are the methods of Active Learning

  • Minute Papers: at some point during lecture, students are asked to for one or two minutes on a given topic. (experience-wise can be done individually after the topic)
  • Self-Assessment: similar to concept inventories and diagnostic assessments, these ungraded exercises, typically delivered at the beginning of a term or new unit, are used to help identify gaps in student understanding. (usually Pre and Post-test for a subject that is read)
  • Interactive Lectures: often in the form of brief polls, these activities take place during lectures, giving students a chance to make predictions, solve short problems, etc.
  • Inquiry Learning: larger in scope, these exercises commonly involve having students conduct different aspects of scientific inquiry, such as observing phenomena, analyzing data, predicting outcomes, etc.

According to and modified from Melbourne University, here are the methods that we can apply, these selected can be applicable for reading textbook

  • Use memorization strategies- examples are MNEMONICS that you can see in First Aid USMLE review materials or in the medtwitter
  • Change the format of information- example a long paragraph in Harrison or Nelson or Katzung , or Harper turn them into diagrams, bullets, or tables
  • Write and Draw frequently- make summaries, glossary or picture taking (for example summary of your Physiology, or Draw for example what you had learned in Legal Medicine)
  • Add missing links or information gaps such as write on piece of paper memorize, then after memorized remove the papers (in my interpretation and experience, this is where PPC's "Vertical-Horizontal Learning with Clinical Correlations" comes into play pls click here for the link to the blog [credits and with Permission from PPCMD2])
  • Practice Labeling, Diagrams- usually done in SGDs Case discussions, Laboratories, Practicals) [you can use the blog about visualizing your lessons in this blog here)
  • Test your understanding- via Pre/Post test - without notes, this will help you learn your weaknesses, also for us medical students we may also practice to correlate, simplify, and use our mother tongue as if talking to a patient

Like making a product in active learning, these textbooks are like raw materials alongside with your lectures or SGDs but applying active learning onto them will be made into a good material or finished product,

Here the goal if applied the ideal is to have 20-50% for active learning in terms of correlating it to other subject

Tip here is ask your professor or instructors what textbook did they use as reference as you can trace it back to apply active learning onto it

Here are now the recommended textbook in tabular form
Take note of the following definitions
  • Main textbook- The one that is most commonly used in medical schools
  • Atlas- textbook used to visualize something
  • Supplementary text- aids used to fill the gaps of one textbook (take note if there are two main textbooks, one will fill the gap of another)
