ChikaAbalahin Minute: How Medical Schools can optimize the performance of the students to the Medical Board Exam

Welcome to Chika Abalahin Minute: where I will discuss some real talk, honest opinion about a particular thing, today I will discuss on how a medical school can help or affect the performance in the board exam, these are the things that the method of how they teach the students can affect board exam

Look at the PRC every result of the Physician licensure exam here in the Philippines and other examinations as well, there is a page there about "TOP PERFORMING SCHOOLS" and  "PERFORMANCE OF SCHOOLS" in terms of that particular date and time of the licensure exam, these result will echo not the student itself but how the medical school teach their student properly that's its called OVERALL PERFORMANCE, as I said in some of my previous blogs, yes, it will depend on the student on how they will pass the board exam, but it will also depend on the medical school on how they will have a good performance in the PLE in terms of the passing rate.

1. Create a good learning environment for the medical students,
- Ideally the environment should have a good ergonomic standards so that the medical student can focus in class, the facilities as much as possible should be complete also, and the equipment must be working properly

2. Ideal Student-Professor ratio
- Ideally the lower student-professor ratio, the more chances of the professor can asses if the student learned everything but there are instances that in a typical classroom there is very high professor to student ratio (ex 1:100) or an auditorium is filled, which if many students can be distracted via sleeping or worst focusing on the gadget, the way that I can suggest is that the professor must roam around to check, there should be a lot of projectors in the room (like in some bigger medical schools in the Philippines) so that even the student is far (given medical school uses microphone and speakers, they will have way to still understand the topic.

3. Huge Library for student
- Sadly, in the medical school where I came from, the library is small and crowded, but there are 2 medical schools here in Manila, I would like to commend since they have a huge library and proper spacing and very quiet which a student can really study. Ideally wide library with huge study area will help a lot.

4. Professors should not just focus on what "must knows" must study, but also on HOW to approach the topic
- Examples in which the professors, yes it is given that medical consultant must teach on what the student must learn, but do they explain on how to approach the subject? In my case my blog of active learning, and dok PPCMD2 on how to correlate subjects, the professors may add their insights onto this so that student may learn and how to study better for the exam, not just to pass the exam but on how to put the topic on heart. Also in SGD and laboratory, a 1:10 may be ideal

5. Battery Test or Comprehensive Exam between 2nd year and 3rd yr
- one perhaps for some of the students may say this is helpful and some may say this is tiring and may burn the student out, but I will be neutral on this matter, one of the medical schools here in manila is practicing this Comprehensive Exam in which before becoming a 3rd yr or moving on to clinicals, student must pass first this comprehensive exam first, advantage that this will reinforce the students learning so that they will not forget on how to apply basic, and they have a very high passing rate, or in even go to top 10 performing medical schools in the board exam, however disadvantage is that it is a long exam so it can give mental burnout. for me if mental health which will be discussed on the next time, and if HOW to study is discussed by the professors is focused, then this will have more benefit than risk.

6. Mental Health of medical students
- Mental health of students must be considered also, since depression and anxiety are common complications of stress, which in term will not just affect the performance of student but their overall being as well, at least do a per month or every 2 months counselling on how a student is doing well aside from Mental Health Break

7.  Proper and Balanced scheduling
- In a certain medical school, I heard there is a medical school that has imbalanced schedule in which a sem has higher load of subject than the other, suggest is make it balanced, annual subjects should be made anuual so that there will be no pressure on the part of the student

8. Supportive school and Alumni
- Alumni's should be supportive in terms also aside from professors in teaching their junior on how to study the subject, application to PRC etc. and cheering the students taking the board exam from both professors, alumni and student body. Also a solid student body will also become a game changer since support will uphold the spirit of students taking the board exam.
