Chika Abalahin Minute: Is there a "Minor subject" in Medical School

Good day Everyone, Maligayang pagdating at pagbabasa sa Chika Abalahin Minute, today we will tackle a question, which based from feedback from those I knew who took the PLE last 2020-March 2023 which can raise a question, is there a "Minor Subject" in medical school?

Disclaimer:
This blog, others may find this a controversial blog ahead, but perceptions may differ from med school to med school

Arbitrarily there may or may be no designation of "minor subjects", however there are some subjects that may be "not focused well" or "sacrificed" because of the more focused or should we say more difficult subjects, these are the following subjects which may or may not fall depending on what medical school you are studying
  • Psychiatry
  • Legal Med/ Medical Jurisprudence
  • Applied Nutrition
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Research
  • Dermatology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Surgical Anesthesia
  • Minor Surgery
  • Family and Community Medicine group
  • Ophthalmology
  • ENT
Some students say that because of this "samplexes" (please read also this blog here) that they may not focus on these subjects.

My say, it will be a big NO, there are NO MINOR SUBJECTS IN MEDICAL SCHOOLS even one, is NOT A MINOR SUBJECT, here are the whys?

1. In the future, you will see patients in your practices that has diseases based on the subjects as mentioned above
2. In the board exams take note PLE, there are subjects that these subjects may be asked and are asked already look at this:
  • Legal Medicine/Medical Jurisprudence and Family and Community Medicine (Preventive Medicine) has their own module in the PLE (Module 5 and 12, respectively), Research related questions is booming in Module 12
  • Surgical Pathology like question can be asked in Pathology Module
  • ENT, Ophthalmology, Surgical Anesthesiology are booming questions like Subspecialty Surgery, and sometimes Minor Surgery like suture in the PLE, meaning they are being asked already, maybe Rehabilitation Medicine may also be asked here
  • Applied Nutrition is asked in a Biochemistry exam last 2020
  • Psychiatry sometimes is asked on Medicine module like IM
The lesson here is that these subjects may help you raise or pass your exam or they may pull your scores low, so studying everything must be equal as these subjects in the board exam is also equal meaning they may or may not come out and board exam take note is UNPREDICTABLE.

Conclusion: the best review will be your background in your 5 years in medical school
